Miami, FL – October 27, 2010 – Institute for Child and Family Health (ICFH), a non-profit organization that offers prevention and treatment programs for children and families in Miami-Dade County, teamed up with the Miami HEAT to host the first annual Violence Prevention Night. The event was held at 7:30 p.m. on October 12, 2010 at the American Airlines Arena. Prior to the game at-risk students from Jose De Diego Middle-School, which ranks among the highest with incidences of fighting in the county, attended a presentation on gang and violence prevention.
The talk was given by Javier Camacho, Community Liaison of the Youth Gang Resource Center at ICFH and Charles J. Hurley, Chief of Police, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. “Police and youth relations serve a critical role in reducing youth violence, said Chief Hurley, “this event allowed the police and youth to interact in a positive manner, laying the foundation for better relationships.” After the presentation, the kids enjoyed the game against CSKA Moscow thanks to the generosity of Alvarez and Marsal, an independent global professional services firm.
This event occurred on the eve of Violence Prevention Funding awarded to ICFH by The Children’s Trust to provide a comprehensive prevention curriculum at Jose De Diego Middle School. The goal of the program is to reduce fighting and other aggressive behaviors while improving the quality of their educational environment.
